Inaugural VLSCI Steering Committee Meeting
Monday 21st September 2009
The first meeting of the VLSCI Steering Committee was held on 31st August 2009. The initial membership of the Steering Committee includes nominees from the University of Melbourne, Parkville Precinct Organisations, Monash University, La Trobe University, and the NCRIS National Computational Infrastructure. The meeting was chaired by Professor Peter Rathjen.
Members of the committee are:
- Professor Ingrid Winship (Melbourne Health),
- Professor Mark Wainwright (National Computational Infrastructure),
- Professor Rob Saint (The University of Melbourne),
- Professor Trevor Kilpatrick (The University of Melbourne),
- Professor Ian Smith (Monash University),
- Professor Liam O'Connor (La Trobe University)
- Professor Doug Hilton (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute)
- Professor Paul Bonnington (Monash University), and
- Professor John O'Callaghan (Director, VLSCI).
The committee will act as an advisory body providing strategic advice and leadership to the University of Melbourne in relation to the development and implementation of the Initiative.
The following items were endorsed at the meeting:
- The position description for the VLSCI Director to be advertised shortly.
- Arrangements for access to the peak computing facilities under a Resource Allocation Scheme. The scheme inherits the APAC and NCI arrangements.
- Evaluation criteria for the VLSCI Resource Allocation Scheme. The resource shares model for the PCF allocates resource shares based on the cash and in-kind contributions to the operation of the PCF.
- The Steering Committee accepted the responsibility for establishing and appointing members to the Resource Allocation Committee.
- The development of the LSCC and the need for seed funding.
- The development of the Peak Computing Facility and the advertisement for staff.
- Progress with the Stage 0 project.
- The establishment of the Science Advisory Committee.
The committee will continue to meet quarterly, with the next meeting proposed for mid-November 2009
